Time away from class takes a real toll on student learning. Annually, educators worry about the summer dip in learning, but snow days can actually create a winter dip. Over the last six years, our districts have averaged five cancellations per year with the majority of these due to inclement weather. In 2014-2015, our districts lost 10 days of school to snow. The 2017-2018 school year has already seen two unscheduled closings due to inclement weather: 12/12/17 and 12/21/17, with the additional days anticipated as we move fully into the winter months of January, February and March
The Orange Elementary District (PreK-6) is conducting a Year II Piloting program for Bag Days for the 2017-2018 school year. We plan to offer instruction remotely on the elementary level via Blizzard bags so that students do not miss any instructional time due to inclement weather. The year II pilot will consist of four Blizzard Bag days as approved by the Orange Elementary School Committee.
